It started on Sunday evenings in Atlanta.

As a young boy living with my grandparents, we had a simple tradition. On Sunday evenings, we would climb into the car and drive around the city. We would pass through different neighborhoods, look at the homes, the lights, the life of the city, and quietly observe how other people lived. At the time it just felt like a ride through town.

But looking back now, those drives were really my first introduction to the idea that there was a bigger world waiting to be explored.

Later, when I moved back in with my parents, our big summer adventure was traveling to Daytona Beach. I’ll be honest with you — I’m pretty sure we were the only Black family on that beach for miles.

But that didn’t matter. What mattered was the feeling of being somewhere new, seeing the ocean, and experiencing something outside of everyday life. Even then, I could feel that travel had a way of expanding your world.

When I was in high school, my family went on a missionary trip to Africa with members of the Church of Christ. What began as a mission experience turned into something even bigger when we stopped in Paris on the way home.

I still remember standing there thinking, I’m actually here.

Not reading about it.
Not watching it on television.

But standing there.

Around that time, my mother gave my brothers and me advice that has stayed with me my entire life. She said,
“When you have the opportunity to travel… take it.”

Years later, I joined the United States Army, and that advice stayed with me.

While stationed in Germany, I took a college class in world history. One of the assignments required us to visit a museum in Cologne, Germany. While walking through the museum, a gentleman from Canada asked my classmate and me where we were from.

We told him we were stationed at a military base about 25 miles away.

He paused for a moment, looked at us, and simply walked away. My friend asked, “What just happened?” I said, “He’s jealous.” And the reason I gave was simple: my friend and I probably spent ten or fifteen dollars to see the museum. That gentleman likely spent thousands of dollars traveling across the ocean to experience the same place.

In that moment, I heard my mother’s voice again: "When you have the opportunity to travel… take it."

Over the years I’ve been fortunate to travel across the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and beyond. Now, every time I see a magazine photo or a scene on television, I get a feeling inside that says, “I’ve been there.” And that feeling… is priceless.

That is exactly why I founded Warrior Travel Services.
